Bob Parsons is the CEO of Internet hosting company GoDaddy, and he recently posted a video of his vacation to Zimbabwe. In the video, he is shown shooting and killing an elephant, then posing proudly with the corpse. Although Parsons stands by his actions, saying he was helping African villagers because the elephant was destroying their crops, but organizations like the World Wildlife Federation offer alternative actions for mitigating that problem. In light of the video, many GoDaddy customers have decided to jump ship from the Internet hosting company.
Popular domain registrar Namecheap.com announced today that it raised $20,000 for Save the Elephants through a campaign that offered users a special discounted domain transfer. Namecheap.com allowed GoDaddy customers to transfer their .com, .net, and .org domains onto their servers for just $4.99 per domain – with 20% of each transfer going to Save the Elephants.
It is estimated so far that over20,000 GoDaddy customers switched services, which earned Namecheap.com $80,000 for facilitating the transfers. In order to cash in on the deal, users simply used the coupon code BYEBYEGD when checking out. The offer ran from March 30th until April 4th at midnight.
Meanwhile, other companies like Canvasdreams.com have offered a free domain switch, using the coupon code DITCHBOB. This just goes to show you: the Internet is a powerful business, and upsetting people (including PETA, which had sites hosted through GoDaddy) will definitely have an effect on business.
