The flying car is (finally) one step closer to becoming a reality. The US Department of Transportation has deemed the Terrafugia Transition® Roadable Aircraft, aka flying car, safe for US roads, and after extensive safety testing commuters could see the vehicle on (and above) the nation’s highways as early as the end of this year.
According to stats listed on the Terrafugia website, the Transition can reach 115 mph in flight and cover a distance of 490 miles. As a car, the vehicle gets 35 miles to the gallon and as a plane the Transition gets 5 gallons per hour. The flying car is 80 inches tall, 78 inches when flying, and has a wingspan of nearly 27 feet. For those worried about safety, the Transition has all the standard automotive crash features as well as full vehicle parachute should things go bad.
Want to own your own flying vehicle? Reserve a Transition by putting down a $10,000 deposit here. The final product will cost you round $250,000. Check out the flying car/driving plane in the video below.
Based in Woburn, MA, Terrafugia is a small aerospace company founded by pilot/engineers from MIT.
