Chidi Ahanotu owes his ex-wife’s attorneys $130,000 in legal fees from a custody battle. He is flat broke and can’t pay her legal fees. So the judge decided to order the former defensive end to turn over his Super Bowl Ring to settle the debt.

“This court is a farce. This court wants a man to hand over his once in a lifetime accomplishment to pay some damn attorney’s fees? I could see if it was going to pay something for my children or my ex-wife.” Ahanotu complained.

Presumably, he tried to protect the ring by telling Circuit Judge Elizabeth Rice that his brother took the ring to settle a $30,000 debt. That apparently did not fly.

Back in September he said he could not afford to pay the $130,000 in legal fees for his ex-wife that accrued during the custody battle. Unfortunatley, he has to turn over the ring or face being jailed for contempt of court.

When he was released from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2005 he had a $5 million dollar contract. He had to be making at least that or a bit less while he was with the St. Louis Rams. So where did the money go?

Sorry Chidi but your own mismanagement of funds is causing you to lose the ring, not some farce of a court system.
