Robots can do almost anything. Some sweep your floor, some scan for bombs and now there is one that will punch you. Yes, punch you.
An Australian draftsman created a robotic boxing buddy he calls Punching Pro. The robot has two arms powered by 12 volt windshield-wiper motors designed to throw punches at human sparring partners.
“This is an automated sparing apparatus that is heaps of fun; it looks and feels like you’re challenging a real fighter,” said inventor Kris Tressider on the website.
Tressider had been using a punching bag to get in shape but tired of hitting the same thing over and over again. He thought it would be better if he had something that he could spar with without stepping into the ring. So he built something that would punch back.
“You can experiment with offensive strategies, defensive positions and counter punching moves, whilst being physically trained to stay agile and keep your guard. You get an extreme upper body workout that will improve your technique,” he wrote.
This fighting robot can be customized to the boxer’s height and weight class. The android can be made shorter or taller. Its speed, strength and agility can be adjusted also. The next thing Tressider would like to do is work on the software side of things so that it will change modes automatically.
