Before your think about playing online poker, consider that your opponent might just be a bot. Poker bots have been around awhile but haven’t been very good, until recently. Lately they seem to have caught on to the slight nuances poker presents, like bluffing. Before that it was rare that they could actually beat a human. Well that has all changed and it’s becoming a nuisance within the online gaming industry.
One professional poker player suspected he wasn’t playing against a human and reported the bots on the site PokerStars. Those bots were shut down. Another popular site, Full Tilt, also realized it was infiltrated by bots and froze some accounts to clean up the site.
A security manager for Poker Stars has said, “PokerStars is continuing to invest substantial resources to combat bots.” Adding, “When a player is identified as a bot, PokerStars removes them from our games as soon as possible.” The company will confiscate winnings and provide compensation when appropriate.
Oddly enough even though bots are frowned up by gaming sites, they are widely available for sale on line. Shanky Technologies will happily sell you a license for the Holdem Poker Bot , the target of Full Tilt’s crackdown, for a mere $129.00. Co-founder of Shanky Technologies, Brian Jetter has said that more than 400 of their customers were shut down by Full Tilt, with Full Tilt seizing about $50,000.00.
The potential for crime syndicates to run the tables with bots is great. Many know how lucrative it can be, but the average human player may never win. He may just loose a lot of his hard earned cash.
So before you spend your money on a gaming site you may want to twice about whether you will play against another human or against a bot.
