If you’re an avid Scrabbler, your games might get a little bit more irritating now. New slang terms have been added to the official list of words that can be used in the popular board game.

Words such as “innit,” “thang,” and “grrl” have been added to the list, as well as tech-related phrases like “webzine” and “Facebook.” The Collins Official Scrabble Words book is compiled in Glasgow, and while the new additions may be welcomed by some, traditionalists may stop dead in their tracks at the 3,000 new words added.

The publishers say it is “the most comprehensive Scrabble wordlist ever produced.” There are terms that refer to Indian cooking and slang terms like “blingy.”

The last edition of the wordlist was published in 2007. The new additions are an “eclectic mix of new technological jargon, overseas English, recent colloquialisms, street sland, and a few phrases that had not made it onto the list until now,” says Robert Groves, Editor of Collins English Dictionaries and editor of the latest word list.

Mark Nyman, who was crowned World Scrabble Champion in 1993, says he is okay with the new additions. “I’m looking forward to using it. When words become commonly used it’s representative and makes sense to include these in this reference book,” he said.

What do you guys think of the new addition? Hopefully there are more words that I can use those dreaded (but points-laden) Qs with.
